"Light Impressions: Four Continents", an exhibition of digital photographs by Ty Bowman
In his current exhibition, "Light Impressions: Four Continents", artist-photographer Ty Bowman blurs the line between observation and imagination by blending light and form to create compelling, intimate scenes from around the world. Presented by TAG Gallery at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, Bowman’s digital photographs are part of a diverse three-person exhibition that opens January 31st and runs through February 25th. The artist will be on hand to discuss his work at the opening reception, Saturday, February 4th from 5 to 8 pm and at the artist’s panel on Saturday, February 11th from 2 to 3 pm.
Photographs taken in Europe, Asia, Africa and North America are both grand and personal at the same time. Each image allows the viewer to participate in the scene by leaving some of the details to the imagination. Bowman walks a fine line between detail and abstraction by employing camera blur to remove much of the fine detail. Tension between reality and imagination has always been a theme in Bowman’s creative process and is evident here in this work.
“The biggest limitation in photography for me is that the subject has to exist in the real world. The subject can’t be a figment of my imagination like it is in a painting or a drawing. The camera can’t take a picture of the image I see in my mind’s eye and that stimulates my creative process and motivated this body of work.”
The exhibit features digital photographs printed on canvas ranging in size from 24 by 36 inches to 40 by 60 inches. Bowman has exhibited his work in France, California, Colorado, Texas and New Mexico. He earned his MFA in printmaking from the University of North Texas and a BJ in photojournalism and a BFA in studio art from the University of Texas at Austin. Bowman first exhibited his black and white pinhole photographs taken in Taos, New Mexico in the summer of 1981. After several years of producing fabricated steel and mixed media sculptures and functional art, Bowman has returned to photography for this exhibition.
